Irene Mary Hopkins, 87, Friendship

Irene Mary Hopkins, 87, of Friendship died Oct. 24, 2009, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

She was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Croom to James E. Sr. and Helen Evans Fowler.

She was raised in Seat Pleasant, and graduated from Maryland Park High School in 1938.

She later graduated from Southeastern University in the District of Columbia with a degree in accounting.

She married William Smith Hopkins in 1940, and they lived in Hall, now part of Bowie, until moving to Friendship in 1965.

She was employed as an accountant with the federal government, primarily with the Department of Defense, retiring in the mid-1970s.

She was a member of St. James Parish in Lothian where she helped with the preparation and serving at church suppers.

She volunteered as a docent at historic Londontowne in Edgewater.

She enjoyed the outdoors and was active planting trees and shrubs on her farm. She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and genealogy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1999; her parents; sisters, Hilda Berryman, Doris Hoover and Margaret Kraft; and brothers, James E. Fowler Jr. and Maurice E. Fowler Sr.

She is survived by her daughters, Geraldine I. "Jerry" Hopkins of Annapolis, and Barbara J. LeCron and her husband Alan of Southport, N.C.; grandsons, Garrett LeCron of Annapolis, and Christopher LeCron and his wife Laura of Akron, Ohio; a great-grandson, Ezra A. LeCron of Akron, Ohio; and sisters, Helen Fenn and Mary Louise Simms, both of Upper Marlboro.

Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at St. James Parish in Lothian.

Interment followed at the parish cemetery.

Pallbearers were Alan Le Cron, Chris Le Cron, Garrett Le Cron, Donald Hopkins, Maurice Fowler Jr. and Richard Mayr.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements were provided by Rausch Funeral Home in Owings.
