The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has received a formal complaint against the Westlake Wolverines football team accusing the squad of fielding an ineligible player.
Charles County Public Schools spokeswoman Katie O'Malley-Simpson confirmed Tuesday that the school system now has five days to conduct an official investigation and a formal hearing on the matter will be held Monday.
Westlake is currently the defending Maryland class 3A state champion, and is currently in the 3A region playoffs as a No. 2 seed after finishing the season 8-2 overall.
According to a statement released by the MPSSAA, the complaint will have no effect on the 3A South region playoffs, and Westlake will host Potomac, the No. 3 seed from Prince George's County, at 7 p.m. Friday, as scheduled.
This action comes less than a week after the Patuxent High School football program was forced to forfeit two games after a player was discovered to be living outside Calvert County, which made him an ineligible player.
A first-year varsity player's parents separated over the summer and the father moved to St. Mary's County. The player had reportedly been living with his father. Calvert County public schools distributed a press release on the forfeitures but did not release the student's name.
