Boy Scout Troops 422 and 789 held a joint ceremony recently honoring their most recent young men to advance to the rank of Eagle Scout. The dual service, held at Grace Brethren Church on Sept. 27, saluted Ryan Myers of Troop 422 and Scott Agnolutto of Troop 789 both of whom attend Northern High School.

Myers, son of Doug and Julie Myers, lives in Owings while Agnolutto and his parents, Dario and Susie Agnolutto, reside in Dunkirk.

Dignitaries in attendance included the President of the Maryland Senate Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert, Prince George's), Calvert County Commissioner Linda Kelley (R), Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans (R), and Calvert County Board of Education member Rose Crunkleton. Each spoke on behalf of their respective organizations and expressed their continued appreciation to the Boy Scouts of America for helping to produce tomorrow's county, state and national leaders, according to a release.

Additionally, each scout received commendations from the dignitaries in attendance as well as Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md., 5th) and Del. Sue Kullen (D-Calvert).

To be considered for the rank of Eagle Scout, Myers and Agnolutto earned advancements over five years of concentrated involvement with their troops. This involvement saw them through six rank advancements, 24 merit badges, several dozen hours of community service, and several positions of leadership within their respective troops. Finally, they each completed Eagle Scout service projects. Each project was a several-month-long endeavor encompassing all aspects of the project: plan, development and design, organization, fundraising, purchasing supplies, leadership and execution.

Myers's project replaced an old, washed-out path and broken-down earthen stairway at the Humane Society of Calvert County. The renovated area now includes three wooden walkways with three adjoining stairways and surrounding mulch. Myers raised more than $500 in cash donations from several of Calvert County's local businesses including Dunkirk Supply and Sneade's ACE Home Center. He also collected individually-donated supplies. The project required the help of 32 scout volunteers who donated approximately 200 hours of manpower.

Agnolutto's project was to rebuild and replant the gardens in front of Northern Middle School. He replaced the fencing, installed garden timbers, picnic tables, new plants and painted the flagpole. He was able to collect $3,500 worth of materials donated in order to complete his project, and enlisted the help of 33 volunteers who contributed a total of 219 volunteer hours.

Outside of scouting, Myers and Agnolutto also have common interests at Northern High School. They are both active in musical theater and the chamber choir. They had roles in the last two musicals, "Oklahoma!" and "How to Succeed in Business." Myers is a member of the boy's varsity soccer team while Agnolutto is a member of the varsity cross country, track and swimming teams. Agnolutto is also active in the student council as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
