Groves Briscoe to be honored on Tuesday

St. Mary's public schools will honor Joan Groves Briscoe, the first African-American student to attend and graduate from what previously had been an all-white St. Mary's County public school, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Meeting Room in the central administration office at 23160 Moakley St. in Leonardtown. Groves Briscoe graduated from Great Mills High School in 1959. St. Mary's public schools were not fully integrated until 1967.

St. Mary's public schools' Work Hard and Be Nice Award winners for October are Cathy Allen, Amanda Burkhardt, James Chase, Kimberly Clements, Gina Derenge, Tamarah Dishman, Christen Doerrer, Wendy Farrell, Cheri Godfrey, Victoria Jean Gray, Martina Green, Joseph Hall, Lewis Harden, Deborah Harrison, Kathleen Harsh, Diane Krafty, Mary Marquis, Kate Martin, Alita Myles, Danny Reed, William Ridley, Aaron Robey, Sherie Robey, Alicia Smith, Regina Wilkinson, Anne Wincelowicz and Mary Wood.

Schools save energy

St. Mary's schools were recognized Nov. 4 for energy conservation with the presentation of the Second Annual Energy Conservation Recognition Awards. Schools that saved 5 percent or more and received $500 are Esperanza Middle, White Marsh Elementary, Ridge Elementary, Piney Point Elementary, Lexington Park Elementary, Margaret Brent Middle, Spring Ridge Middle, Leonardtown Middle, Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, Benjamin Banneker Elementary, George Washington Carver Elementary, Dynard Elementary, Greenview Knolls Elementary, Hollywood Elementary and Green Holly Elementary.
