The Charles County commissioners have the opportunity to do something of immeasurable value: Save the Mattawoman Creek and its watershed for future generations.
They would be remembered as the governing body that saved a natural treasure. Make the Mattawoman Creek and its watershed a preserve to be protected in perpetuity for the benefit of the citizens of Charles County as well as the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Build a Mattawoman Creek park with a raised walkway for viewing this natural treasure so that people can visit and appreciate what a productive fish spawning tributary of the Chesapeake Bay looks like.
The attraction would be huge. A visitors center would show how it was saved from encroaching development, the value of its spawning grounds to the Chesapeake Bay and the importance of protecting our environment. It would be a wonderful tourist attraction, and it should be dedicated to the county commissioners who had the vision to save this natural treasure for future generations.
Please embrace this opportunity to make an invaluable impact on the future of Charles County and for the environment.
