UniStar Nuclear has filed an application for state approval to build a third reactor at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby.
UniStar applied for ‘‘certificate of public convenience and necessity” on Tuesday, Nov. 13, with the Maryland Power Plant Research Program, a filing that will provide the information necessary for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and other state agencies to determine their position on the reactor before the application comes before the Maryland Public Service Commission.
The Public Service Commission regulates energy providers in the state, and its approval is necessary to construct the reactor.
‘‘It’s another step in the process. This is a state process. ... This is just something that we must do to pursue putting a new [reactor] at Calvert Cliffs. It’s a required process, and we made the submission,” said UniStar Senior Corporate Communications Consultant Lori Vidil.
UniStar has not yet committed to building the reactor even if granted approval, Vidil said. UniStar is a partnership between Constellation Energy, which owns the nuclear power plant, and French energy company AREVA.
