Flu shots to be offered at two high schools

The St. Mary's County Health Department has scheduled two public vaccination clinics on Thursday, Dec. 10, to provide seasonal and H1N1 virus vaccines. The clinics will be held at Great Mills High School and Leonardtown High School from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Both vaccines are available to all age groups and risk categories.

The H1N1 vaccine is free and a $20 donation is requested for the seasonal flu vaccine. The health department will bill Medicare for those eligible. For information call 301-475-4330.

Youth football meeting set for Wednesday

The St. Mary's County Department of Recreation and Parks and the Southern Maryland Youth Football League have formed a partnership. The new program will be called the St. Mary's Youth Football League and will begin play next fall.

In the new league, volunteer-run youth football clubs will be established in communities throughout the county to handle player registration, fundraising, recruitment of coaches and the formation of teams. Each club will enter their teams into age/weight divisions within the league.

An informational meeting for the St. Mary's Youth Football League is scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Hollywood Recreation Center located at the old Hollywood Elementary School at 24400 Mervell Dean Road in Hollywood. All interested coaches, administrators and parents are encouraged to attend. For more information call 301-475-4200, ext. 1800.

SSA help available at CSM

Representatives from the Social Security Administration will be available at the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus, Building A, 22950 Hollywood Road today, Dec. 9, and the second Wednesday of each month, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Social Security can be called at 1-800-772-1213 for answers to questions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Skywarn class scheduled

St. Mary's County government is hosting a Skywarn class today, Dec. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the commissioners' meeting room located in the Chesapeake Building at 41770 Baldridge St. in Leonardtown to train citizens to become storm spotters.

The free class will last about two hours and includes topics of basics of thunderstorm development, fundamentals of storm structure, identifying potential severe weather features, how to report information and basic severe weather safety.
