A judge has ordered that a 14-year-old Great Mills High School student be detained on assault and weapons charges after another student was repeatedly stabbed Wednesday afternoon in a classroom.

The injured student, identified by authorities as 16-year-old Ricky Devonte Thomas, was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital for cuts to one of his wrists and his abdomen, according to St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies.

The parents of the suspect in the case attended a hearing Thursday morning in St. Mary’s Circuit Court, where Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin J. McDevitt said the stabbing in a classroom occurred amid ‘‘ongoing issues” between the two students. A juvenile services agent said the suspect was ‘‘very cooperative” with police after the incident.

Public defender Sean Moran said the Great Mills boy arrested in the case has never before been in the juvenile court system, and had acted in self-defense against one of a group of older students who have been tormenting him.
