Judge Warren Krug sentenced Jonathon F. Murphy, 27, of Forestville to two, 10-year consecutive terms in the Calvert County Circuit Court on Friday for his Aug. 13 guilty plea to two counts of bank robbery.
Krug did not suspend any of the incarceration time nor give Murphy probation for the Dunkirk bank robbery that occurred on Feb. 1.
Murphy presented a note during the robbery to a BB&T bank teller, stating, "this is a stick up," and after he was given $2,690, he fled the scene in a Jeep Cherokee. With the help of a witness at the scene who described the vehicle, police spotted Murphy's vehicle on Route 4 and he lead police on a high speed chase into Prince George's County, where he rammed his vehicle into a Maryland State Police cruiser and then crashed into a culvert, according to court records.
Assistant State's Attorney Andrew Rappaport, who prosecuted the case and agreed to the open plea, argued to sentence Murphy above the sentencing guidelines because of his prior history. Sentencing guidelines were three to seven years for each count of robbery, he said.
Murphy was already on probation for bank robbery and this bank robbery was "a mirror of the last case," Rappaport said.
"Probation is a benefit, not a matter of course," Rappaport said.
The stolen money was recovered so a restitution payment was not applicable. Murphy will serve his sentence at the Maryland Department of Corrections.
