The Leonardtown Lions Club and the students of St. Mary's Ryken High School jointly participate in the St. Mary's County Christmas Caring program to provide Christmas gifts for area children. Gift tags for these children may be taken from the Christmas tree in the Leonardtown True Value store by anyone who wants to share their Christmas spirit. The gifts are to be returned to the store by Dec. 18. The Lions Club will pick up and deliver the gifts.
The Leonardtown Lions Club will be sponsoring a Red Cross blood drive Dec. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in California. To schedule an appointment call 800-GIVE-LIFE. Walk-ins are welcome.
A free family game night will be hosted by All Faith Episcopal Church in Charlotte Hall on Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the church hall. Board games and activities for children and adults of all ages will be hosted. Snacks will be provided. Call 301-884-3773.
A steak and shrimp dinner will be sponsored by the American Legion Post 221 in Avenue on Dec. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. The menu includes a 12 oz. New York strip steak for $13 and a pound of steamed shrimp for $13. Sandwiches will be available.
An auction will be held Dec. 18 at the Trinity Church Parish Hall in St. Mary's City. Doors open at 5 p.m., and auction begins at 6 p.m. The will be free wine and cheese tasting and other refreshments, including stuffed ham. Call 301-862-4597.
A holiday family fun night will be held by Tri-County Youth Services Bureau on Dec. 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jarboe Educational Center in Lexington Park. Christmas trees will be sold by the Mechanicsville Optimist Club through Dec. 23 on weeknights from 5 to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at lots at McKay's in Charlotte Hall and the Mechanicsville VFD carnival lot. The 24th annual Christmas Doll and Train Exhibit will be presented by the St. Clement's Island Museum in Colton's Point beginning Dec. 2. The month-long exhibit features antique and collectible dolls and toys, and working miniature trains. The theme of this year's exhibit is "Christmas in Maryland" which continues the year-long celebration of Maryland's 375th birthday. The exhibit will be available through Jan. 3. Garden In Lights, a walk-through light show, is offered at Annmarie Garden in Dowell from Dec. 4 to Jan. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. on scheduled nights, weather permitting. The walk is closed Dec. 24 and 25. Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors; $2 for children 5 to 12; children younger than 5 and AMG members are free.

A Naval Academy information reception will be held by the Greater Southern Maryland Chapter of the U.S. Naval Academy on Dec. 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. At 6 p.m., a ceremony will be held to recognize Southern Maryland high school seniors who are completing the Naval Academy application process this year. Presentations will provide information on the application and selection processes, student life, academics, degree programs and hands-on training experiences with the fleet while at the Naval Academy. Representatives from the U. S. Naval Academy Office of Admissions will be present to discuss specifics of the selection process and counsel prospective applicants on what they can do now to position themselves as strong candidates for selection to any of the service academies.
