Break-in reported at day care center

Sheriff’s officers were conducting patrols at 1:10 a.m. Dec. 26 when they discovered someone had pried open the back door of Jellybeans Daycare at 12108 Charles St. in La Plata.

A representative from the day care center responded and determined nothing appeared to have been stolen.

Officer K. Burger is investigating.

Masked man robs Verizon store

Sheriff’s officers responded to Verizon Wireless at 2915 Crain Highway in Waldorf at 11:15 p.m. Dec. 21 for the report of an armed robbery.

Investigation revealed a man forced his way through the back door of the store as an employee was walking out.

The man brandished a weapon, forced employees into a back room and ordered the manager to open the safe. The manager complied, and the man stole an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene.

Officers, including a canine team, searched the area but the man was not located.

He was wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and a dark ski mask.

Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest or indictment. Additionally, Verizon Wireless is offering a $9,000 reward for any information.

Detective J. Elliott is investigating.

Sheriff’s office to conduct sobriety checkpoints

The sheriff’s office will conduct multiple sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout the county beginning Dec. 29 and continuing throughout the New Year holiday.

The sheriff’s office is not disclosing the location of the checkpoints but signs on the roadway will advise motorists as they approach them.

Officers will check all vehicles that pass through the checkpoint and drivers who are found to be intoxicated will be arrested.

Delays for motorists are expected to be minimal.
